Pugs and Promises

One week today since we said goodbye to our love pug. Steve and I have gone through several stages of grief - sadness, anger, regret, blame...now we're just sort of empty and depressed. It helps to be out and busy. We have the most amazing friends who have supplied us with prayer, love, support, and wine.

As I reflect on the effect Miles had on our lives, I know that every moment and penny spent was well worth it. He taught us about uninhibited joy, unconditional love, selflessness, and appreciation for food (!). We now know how to raise and train an amazing dog...though he sure made it easy.

I'm so glad Miles was able to spend Christmas with us in our new home. He was so cute sitting by the Christmas tree, waiting for company to arrive, we couldn't resist the photo-op. The red turtleneck slays me.

We met with a Pug breeder the other day and got to play with newborn pups. We'll hopefully ~~pick one out~~ be picked out by one of them in few weeks when they're ready to leave their mama. I'm so excited, I can hardly wait. Our home just doesn't feel right with a wrinkled furbaby.

Oh...so this is supposed to be a style blog. Some of that comin' up later this week. Pinky promise.

Life and Loss

Oh boy. So much has happened in the past few days and weeks. Steve and I moved into our new house. We LOVE it. It feels more and more like "home" every day. I misplaced the USB cords in the move, so though I do have some pictures to share, they will have to wait. This post, unfortunately, could not wait.

Horrible news. We had to say goodbye to our sweet Miles on Wednesday morning. His health took a bad turn and we ran out of treatment options and funds. I cannot recall a more devastating event in my life. Being that he was only 1 1/2 years old, we continued to hold out hope for his eventual recovery and remission from IMPA (Immune Mediated Poly-Arthritis). To recount all that his little body had been through to this point would take forever. His life was short, but so full of love and purpose. The pain of his loss is so fresh, it's hard to imagine ever getting over it, though I know we will with time.

We leave for a 2 week Disney vacation on the 15th. We're looking forward to some advanced healing and rest only The Happiest Place on Earth could provide as well as a fresh start to our unplanned future without Miles.

I can't have my baby Pug back. So the next best thing is getting another one, right? Hold me back, Stevie, hold me back.

Shame on me. Leaving you hanging like that for so many weeks. I just checked my gmail and there are few hundred unopened emails. Yeah...sooooo not going to tackle that right now. Here's what's been going on in my life and brain lately:

1. I live and breath Hot Mama (no complaints).
2. Steve and I bought a house. We close on Friday. We're nervous/excited. We're packing. The amount of crap is insane.
3. My BFF is preggo with twins (E, I miss you. Please stop puking long enough for us to hang out soon. Tell the babies I love them. Thanks.)
4. Miles still has good days and bad days. He's on an all raw diet now. He loves it. We love that he loves it.
5. I have discovered the awesomeness that is Clothes Mentor and intend on trading clothes for cash as a means of buying more clothes...mostly at Hot Mama.
6. 35 days until a 2 week Disney vacation! Mentally and emotionally, I'm already packed and ready to go.
7. I made my first purchase at LOFT. Strange, I know. The cape you see here was $13, marked down from $114. My knack for finding a bargain has not been lost.
8. I have decided that I cannot keep up with short hair and am contemplating other styles as I grow it out a bit. The in-between phase is pretty gross.
9. I have great aspirations of re-focusing/re-prioritizing the ol' blog. I want it to become an extension of what I do at Hot Mama - highlighting the experiences and products that make my job so great...it's just a matter of finding the time.
10. Time for bed.

It helped that we shopped the very upscale intersection of 50th & France in Edina, MN and couldn't have afforded most of it if we wanted to. Perhaps this is a new frugal shopping technique? Good company and no real money to spend. And anyway, I'm supposed to be saving for the perfect swimsuit from Nani Nalu and a piece (or two or three) from Kokoon.

Product Review: Clarisse Dress

Hello. Jill here. A few weeks ago, I was asked to review a Clarisse prom dress. I'm more than a decade beyond prom and not a formal-loving girl, but it sounded like a fun opportunity to gussy up and take pictures. I chose the Black Homecoming Dress 1309.

Oh, so adorable. But uh-oh, no room for my double D's. So I had to enlist the help of one ~~equally~~ much more fabulous and smaller on top. Everyone, say hello to Keely. (Hello, Keely).

Keely can rock-out ANYTHING, so this dress was hardly a challenge for her. She went big and bright with accessories. Her hot pink and black fascinator is handmade, and I would guess that her massive necklace is a thrift-store treasure. A leather bracelet and patent booties complete the sassy ensemble.

Here is what we loved about the dress: It's timeless and versatile. Formal wear is usually worn once, then stuffed in the back of a closet for years until it is rediscovered and likely donated or sold for no where near the original price. But I can see this dress coming out to play for numerous occasions. It can be dressed up with lots bling and stilettos for the rare formal event, OR it can be dressed down with boots and a graphic tee for girls night out.

We also love the details. The big bow is long enough that it could be tied around the front as opposed to the back. The length is universally flattering. The big ruffle around the top of the dress is absolutely adorable. It came with a halter strap for those of us who stress over strapless (hand raised). And the color...you can't go wrong with classy, flattering black.

What we I didn't love about the dress: Obviously, the fact that I couldn't wear it. I could size up and and up and up, but the boob space would never be enough for moi. But if you're a B-cup or smaller, you'd be very happy with this dress.

Now seriously, could I have found a cuter girl to model? Answer: Nope.

The blaze orange Prairie Underground hoodie was a rare piece for Hot Mama. Only the Woodbury location received them, and not many. Karen was a lucky customer who bought one. She came back in the store one day to get some ideas on what to wear with it. I offered her a few ideas (SO many colors look great paired with blaze orange!). The next day, a message was relayed that Karen had put an item on hold for me at Eddie Bauer (across the street) - something she thought would go with my OUR hoodie.

I hadn't been in an Eddie Bauer in EONS and had no idea what to expect. Holy cuteness! Sure, it's not the trendiest place on earth, but their basics (tees, flannels, etc.) and outerwear are adorable. And I don't know why I had never thought of shopping for Steve there - their clothes are perfect for Disc-Golf.

The very nice salesperson presented me with this green tank, on clearance. Not only does the color look fantastic with the orange, but the ruffle detail peeking out of the zipped hoodie is too darn cute. It had to come home with me. Thanks, Karen, for your thoughtfulness and for re-introducing me to Eddie Bauer!

I've been to purse parties and jewelry parties. MaryKay, Arbonne, and Melaleuca parties. Fun and informative, yes. But none of these have truly spoken to my lust for spending because my #1 shopping priority has always been CLOTHING.

Enter KOKOON. A boutique without borders is exactly what it is. A private pop-up shop that will set up a trunk show in your very own living room, with only your specially chosen guests in attendance. I'm excited to go to my first Kokoon boutique next month!

Designs are crafted with a busy, modern woman in mind (that's all of us, right?). I particularly love the use of basics - with the chicness factor taken up several notches. It was no problem selecting my favorite items from their website. Prices are reasonable, but I better start saving if I'm going for a whole outfit (*wink).

I nearly died when this bright Prairie Underground hoodie came in at Hot Mama. Colors I had seen in this style were typically muted. I momentarily resisted trying it on for fear of what I knew would be too tempting of a purchase. The price tag read just over $200! Granted, I get an employee discount, but still.

Somewhat hesitantly, I tried it on. Pure LOVE. I'm a girl who knows and loves her casual-wear, so hoodies and sweatshirts abound in my closet. But this one...this one was soooooo different. It made me feel special. The color made me glow. The fit made me feel light and slim. And that ruffled collar made me feel like a queen. I calculated the value of the hoodie by how much I would wear it, how much I love it, and how I feel IN it. I determined that sacrificing a few smaller purchases in order to afford this one was worth it.

And now I will spend the month of October proving to myself that cost-per-wear matters MORE than the cost of the item itself. Oh boy, here I go.

Sighs of Relief

Can I just take moment to breath a sigh of relief...(ahhhhh). This concludes the first week of my new dream job at Hot Mama. How awesome is it to look forward to work every day? Pretty darn awesome. One of the reasons I never ventured into retail before was because I couldn't imagine having to work evenings and weekends. Turns out, when it's something I love and enjoy doing, it really doesn't matter when I do it...because I want to be there all. the. time.

Also...the clothes-swap is over. Thank God. Not that I don't love the event, but the timing wasn't good for me this year. It went really well with the help of some wonderful friends (you know who you are), and for that I am incredibly grateful.

Now that my schedule has lightened significantly, I plan to make time for blogging again. I have some big plans for October. Like, sharing a few local businesses with you that contributed raffle prizes to the clothes-swap. They're all so great, you deserve to know them.

AND, I've challenged myself with styling my new Prairie Underground hoodie as many ways as possible. There might even be a vote for your favorite look at the end of the month. Fun stuff like that.

eShakti Review and GIVEAWAY!

Isn't she a beauty? She was carefully chosen when eSkakti asked me to review an item from their website.

There were so many great styles to choose from, but the moment I laid eyes on this dress in that glorious sunshiney color, I knew she was the one.

I opted for a custom fit, providing eShakti with measurements for my bust and waist. I also specified my height and chose an above the knee length.

eShakti is all about options. Their customer can ask for the fabric, color, body, styling and sizing that she likes.

As promised, she arrived at my doorstep less than a week later.

The color = perfection. Even more beautiful in person than in the picture.

The fabric = quality. This is not cheap, dainty material. It's surprisingly weighty, crisp, and well-constructed.

The fit = bummer. Here's where it all goes wrong for me (thus, right for you). For having provided my custom measurements, the fit was so. way. off. I knew the moment I held it up from the package. What should have been something around a size 4, is probably closer to a 10. The arm holes = too big. The bust = close, but not quite. The waist = much too large. The length = not above the knee. What happened!? We may never know the real answer.

Though I was not able to return or exchange the dress, eShakti did provide me with $25 toward another item. I have my eye on several great blouses, but haven't settled on what to try next. Regardless, I will probably opt out of their custom fitting and see if I have better luck with standard sizing.

Since it was of no cost to me, I offered to proceed with the review. But instead of pictures of me wearing it, loving it, keeping it...I'm offering it to one lovely reader to wear, love and keep. Maybe this is your size, or maybe you're willing to have it altered. You won't be sorry for adding this adorable dress to your wardrobe. I envision it worn so many different ways, even in fall/winter

About the big news that I mentioned the other day...
I QUIT MY JOB.
Not this one, the other one.
Hot Mama is opening in Woodbury (MN) next week and I am the new Assistant Manager! I am beyond ecstatic. Like, all I want to do is dance around and eat cake and celebrate until I pass out.

But there's no time for that. Between fulfilling my 2 weeks at soon-to-be old job, starting a new job (new store!), planning the clothes-swap, finding a house, renting our condo, looking for a car, keeping the dog alive, lovin' on my Stevie, and blogging...I'm busier than EVER (maybe?), and loving every minute of it!

The clothes-swap just keeps getting better and better. I already have a garbage bag FULL of donations, and plan on getting rid of a TON more. I'm ready to trade in my corporate casual for Hot Mama chic! And what better cause to do it for!

Miles got a new shirt. I've spent way too much time and money trying to find a good pug-fit at the local pet stores. It seems nothing is made for neck rolls of this magnitude.

I found Patty on Etsy who outfits her Boston Terrier (Molly) in custom t-shirts to help with her grass allergy. Realizing that Bostons and Pugs have similar body types, I thought I'd give it shot.

This is by far the best fitting tee I've tried on Miles. It covers all of his owies, but is loose enough for his skin to breath and heal. The turtle neck can be flipped up or down and sits high and tight so the sores on his neck are not exposed.

Love the baseball style and color combination. Love that it doesn't get in the way when he goes potty. And love that he looks like a little man-pug.

Remember Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? I have to wonder if those jeans were a Michael Stars one-size creation (j/k. jeans don't come one-size IRL - that'd be terrible). But it sure seems to work for Michael Stars tees. I was introduced to the brand at Hot Mama (where else?), and am continually amazed at the range of sizes and body types that they fit. It has to do with the dolman sleeves and intentional slouchiness, I'm sure.

And the fall/winter lookbook? To die for.

How much do I appreciate the fabulous use of head-wear? Way much.

Wowzers. What a week. By way of several divine happenings, Steve and I have decided to look for a house. It's a little nerve-wracking with no solid plan for what to do with our studio condo, but we're more optimistic than we've ever been. We took yesterday off work for house hunting. Saw 13 properties, and made an offer on one!

Miles is doing well, all things considered. He saw the vet on Wednesday. They agreed to reduce his Prednisone and provided us with some methods of treating some of his issues in the meantime. It was a huge relief. Little dude is acquiring quite a wardrobe. Mama won't have her baby be the doggy freak of the neighborhood.

As for my stolen iPhone situation, I have resorted to using one of Steve's old phones that isn't exactly...'smart'. So it may take me a little longer to approve comments and respond to emails. No Instagram pictures for while (tear). Major Sudoku withdrawal. The thing barely holds a charge. It's scratched and grimy. But it's better than nothing.

The weather has been beyond lovely. Sunny with a slight chill is exactly how I like it. And the cape/poncho trend - bring it.

My iphone was stolen yesterday. Right out of the front pocket of my purse. While I was wearing my purse. I don't feel like rehashing all of the stupid details. No, I didn't have the Find My iPhone app. I didn't have a lot of apps, but that one might have been helpful, darn it. Seems like I'm always getting stuff lost or stolen. Maybe I look like an easy target? Or maybe I'm just too careless and/or trusting. In any case, it sucks.

My 3 day weekend felt like one really long day. All good, except the phone part. Oh, and weird mystery stains appeared on several of my whites when they came out of the washer/dryer. And my puppy is still sick.

But other than that, it's all really good. Really.

As in, these pants are too long (paired with the shoes you cannot see) and drag on the ground. Remedy: taller shoes.

Ya know the great thing about clothes-swaps? Zero buyers remorse. These jeans came from last year's swap. They fit great when I first put them on, but as the day goes, so does the elasticity in the denim. Maybe if I had paid for the pants I'd feel obligated to take them to a real tailor for a proper fitting. But since I made no financial investment in them, I took my chances with a DIY. Scoot those buttons over an inch or two, ignore the now slightly off-center zipfly, and ta-dah! A much better fit.

Ghetto fabulous or brilliant ingenuity...call it what you will.

Being one who is called 'Jill', it's only natural people nickname me Jillie, Jilliebean, or Jilliebeanie. Also quite fine with me. I think nicknames are cute and endearing...at least the ones that I've been called. Then because Jilliebean gets a little long, it's been shortened to Bean, Beaner, Beanie. Again, I don't mind. My dad still calls me some variation of 'Bean' as do several childhood pals that I still keep in touch with.

I bring all this up because for some reason, I am reminded of a younger self in this picture. Goofy grin, cut-off shorts, pink loafers, rubber watch and a friendship bracelet. Yep. This is me circa 1989. You can call me 'Bean'.

What a waste of a beautiful weekend. Ugh. I was feeling some pressure behind my eyeballs on Friday, and by Saturday, it felt like I'd been punched in the nose. I spent nearly the entire weekend in bed. Still not 100% today as I sit here with a box of tissue and a cup of lemon tea, but it could be worse. The last time I went to the doctor for a sinus infection, they told me that it wasn't a sinus infection, but just a cold and to go home and rest. Speaking of Perry, is anyone else into Phineas & Ferb? Lori and her family introduced Steve and I to it a few weeks ago, and we (mostly Steve) have been hooked ever since. Perry the platypus reminds us of Miles (because everything bug-eyed, dog-like, and/or dangerous reminds us of Miles). We've been leaving the pug at home during the workday and coming home at lunch to check on him. We leave the patio blinds open because he likes to lay by the window and watch for passing squirrels and stray cats. That's where he is when we leave and that's where he is when we get home. However, I can't help but imagine a fedora-wearing, crime-fighting dog when no one is looking. This secret, over-active lifestyle might actually explain a few of his health issues.

I'd take Dr. Doofenschmirtz's evil antics over horrible auto-immune diseases any day.

Seriously, I lost count after a dozen costume changes. Loved it.

I think KP and I could be friends. In spite of the surreal naughty Candyland theme of the California Dreams tour, Katy had many down-to-earth moments with the audience that made her seem more like the cute girl next door and less like a Hollywood pop princess. And she's funny. And she's married to real funny dude. I think a double date is in order.

Good grief, does this girl have a long list of hits. I didn't realize. I also didn't realize that she can really sing. I sort of assumed that all pop stars rely on auto-tuning and their live concerts mostly lip-synced, but Katy appeared to be the real deal. Her vocals were especially impressive during the slower, acoustic songs - like when it was just her playing a bedazzled guitar while suspended on a cotton candy cloud...that was great.

The question of whether or not this show was appropriate for the -13 crowd arose several times between my friends and me. It definitely walks the line. And yet, that is the brilliance of the Katy Perry brand. It's all cupcakes and sparkles to distract the little ones from the mature lyrics and adult humor ("homemade" brownie, anyone?), creating fans that span several generations. I like to think the sexuality of it is over the kids heads. All they notice is a cute girl in blue hair and sparkly dresses dancing around a candycane forest...at least, I hope that's all they notice. Would I allow my pre-teen daughter to go to Katy Perry concert? Mmm...NO. But I'm also NOT a parent of a pre-teen daughter, so I won't judge.

My only criticism of the evening would be how looooooooong we waited for Katy to take the stage. We arrived at the auditorium shortly after 7pm, knowing she would likely have an opening act or two that we could miss as we purchased drinks and found our seats. DJ Skeet Skeet or whatever his name was finally ended his set shortly after 8:30. It seemed like forever before the real concert started after 9pm (hello! this old lady has to work in the morning!)! But once it started, the energy didn't stop and the long wait was soon forgotten.

Katy Perry concert tickets didn't come with a dress code warning. Our fabulousness was upstaged by tweens in blue wigs and cupcake bras. We never felt so classy...or old. Regardless, we had a blast. We went with low expectations, and left thoroughly impressed and highly entertained. More on the concert after I sift through all the pictures.

I got them at gojane.com for $13.95. They were a birthday present to myself (yeh!). They come in natural too, but the black seemed more dramatic. They run big - that's no joke. I'm usually a 7 1/2 - 8, and the size 7 fits me perfectly. The heel slips a little bit, but other than that, they are super comfortable.

Buyers beware - Modcloth has these in red for $44.99 - (gasp!). I love me some Modcloth and browse ~~daily~~ often, but the markup slays potential purchases. Boo.

Hug a Pug

I'm in love with this furball. He continues to have medical issue after medical issue and every time another thing comes up, I become a greater mess of nerves and emotions. Trying to maintain optimism has become very, very difficult. It's no ones fault that he's sick, but having made treatment decisions on his behalf, I can't help but feel pangs of guilt and remorse. We're walking a fine line between treating the disease and slow killing him with Predinose. It's the only drug that has kept his IMPA at a managable level, but now he's developed disgusting, open sores on his back. We're doing what we can to keep it from getting worse and are discussing a more agressive plan for getting him off the Pred, but he will inevitably lose some fur in those highly visible areas. He doesn't act sick at all, but now I have to look at (and smell) this physical reminder of his illness.

The vets commend us for being so patient and proactive, but our efforts have yet to produce any lasting results. We've thrown thousands of dollars at treatments because we believe this little guy is worth it. My heart breaks over his well-being. As hard as the doctors try, their kind sympathy and direction provides very little comfort anymore. Thankfully, daddy-Steve has maintained a clear head and hopeful spirit, all while preventing me from voyaging into the depths of despair. He's amazing.

In the meantime, there are things that we (that's you and me) can do:

YOU: if you have a dog or know a dog, please give him/her some extra special attention today. Right now, if possible. Hugs, belly rubs, play time, treats, whatever. It'll make the world a better place, I'm sure of it.

ME: I'm going to find some cute shirts for Miles to wear to protect his smelly sores (the vet said it's ok). Trouble is, Pugs have such large necks that it's difficult to find shirts that fit properly. If you know of any good shops for that sort of thing, let me know.

Now that I've shared our pitiful sob story, I suppose it would be a good time to ask you to vote for us again. That's right, I'm totally playing the 'IMPA-with-a-side-of-smelly-sores' card. As if you could possibly resist.

Backpacking Life

My favorite backpack has been getting a whole lot of use lately. I usually take the bus to and from my second job, so I need something easy to carry, with room for everything needed from 7am to 9pm.

To keep from being mistaken for a student, I opt for a backpack with utilitarian design and in neutral colors. Sleek enough for the office, easy enough for the bus, and stylish enough for Hot Mama. These options from Shoebuy would do just fine.

Design Vertigo in North St. Paul was the place to be on Friday night. A fashion show kicked off the arrival of items by local designer Jenny Carle. I loved how the models were Design Vertigo customers - they did a great job!

It was my first time shopping at Design Vertigo and I was so impressed! The store is brilliantly decorated and the product is well priced.

Every Friday night through September 16, downtown N. St. Paul hosts a History Cruze Car Show where the streets are lined with adorable, old cars. I recommend the funnel cake, antique shops, and Design Vertigo, which stays open until 10pm.

Anti-Drone

Until a couple years ago, I was not aware that Lee Jeans manufactured anything pertaining to my size, age group, or style preference. Then during one random trip to Kohl's, I spotted some cute, low-rise, cuffed capri's in Petite. And I've thought much better of Lee Jeans ever since.

But I still had some concerns when Lee sent me a few styles to try. These black skinnies are definitely the best fit, but are closer to a slim-straight leg than a skinny. Based my experience, I would guess that all styles run a bit large as well. I like the rise - not too low - and the booty is not "mom jean-ish" at all.

I don't know why, but I find black pants so very boring. I never know how to wear them without looking like a corporate casual drone. Enter lots of layers, man-ish accessories, and leopard heels. A little ridiculous, but fun.

Just poppin' in to say 'hello' on this lovely Friday. My in-laws are hosting a multi-family garage sale. Steve and I took the day off work to help out.

This BabyBjorn is for sale and we couldn't resist seeing how Miles would fit. Almost perfect, just a bit small. And he was surprisingly content in it. Playing the role of my baby...as it should be.

I'm amazed at what people will buy at garage sales. Truly, one man's junk is another man's treasure.

Maxi-Dressing

I'm slowing acclimating to the maxi trend. Skirts are easy. It's the dresses that trip me up (pun intended). Maxi dresses make me feel...swollen. I think I'm not used to having so much of my upper arms and shoulders exposed. This dress (my only maxi dress) also has an empire waste which draws extra attention to my chest. Overall, it's just not a good look for me.

What I do like is the super soft fabric and colorful print. Pairing it with a light-weight jacket provided the coverage I needed without adding a lot of weight.

Here's a little fashion tip for ya:

When ironing, start with the temperature setting lower than what you think the fabric requires and adjust from there. Why, you ask? Because melted fabric in the shape of your iron is not cool. It has never been cool. It will never be cool. (Unless Alexa Chung starts a new trend or something...then maybe.)

What would have been cool is if I still had the option of wearing this shirt out. I don't. Why, you ask? Because there is now a massive spot on the lower portion of the shirt that looks a lot like my iron (it is). Which brings me to my next piece of advice:

IF you're not going to start the temperature low, do not start ironing in a highly visible area of the garment. (High-five for that advice!)

I'm a learn-by-experience type of girl. But you can learn from MY experience, ok? Isn't that generous of me? No really, it's my pleasure. You're sooooo welcome.

Today marks the first day of the last year of my 20's. My fantastic husband got me a hot pink case and Photoshop Elements for my iMac, which I've been trying to save up for quite a while now (unsuccessfully. because shoes always take priority).

I already spent my birthday money on 3 pairs of shoes (see above) and a few sale items from Hot Mama. No need to waste any time.

Today, all I want is a haircut, a nap, and maybe some fish tacos for lunch. Order of probability: Tacos, haircut, nap. But I can stare at this picture of napping baby Miles and it's almost as good.

(I have! At the MN fashion bloggers meetup. She came all dressed up in one of her signature-style dresses. She's as lovely in real-life as you'd imagine from her blog!)

Self-described style: I gravitate towards items with something special about them, a wow factor. Anyone who knows me can attest that I am annoyingly attracted to patterns and prints and I'm not afraid to use lots of color. Most of my favorite things to wear have a classic silhouette (a la natural waistline) but are quirky, thoughtful or unexpected. My style tends to be a balance of modern and vintage, new and old, bright and brighter. In the end, if it's a floral, teal or red, I might already own it.

Last Great Purchase: I recently got a Goorin Brothers hat from BlackBlue. This hat was like my holy grail- not too floppy or firm (that's what she said), and neutral enough to go with anything I own (but still a pattern). They're based in San Francisco, so my fiance and I plan to get more when we're there for our honeymoon in October.

Style Advice: Dress for your favorite asset. I used to get so disappointed when certain trends didn't work for me and felt wrong (low rise jeans or tube tops, anyone?) but I realized it's because I wasn't playing up my favorite things about myself. For example, I think I have a great waist (tooting my own horn here) so I try and wear things that accentuate that. Once I realized that certain silhouettes and trends weren't for me, I could move on to wearing things that make me feel my best! If you got it, flaunt it! And people say it all the time, but it's so true- when you feel good, you look even better! Oh, and I personally feel like adding color to any ensemble is a move I can get behind. But be you! I'll never be a minimal dresser (in coverage or in aesthetic) but that's okay because it's who I am!

Jungle Heat

There was a rumor last week (or the week before?) that Minnesota was the hottest place on the planet. Taking both the temp and humidity into consideration, hotter than the Amazon jungle...something ridiculous like that. It's hard for me to believe. In any case, it's been hot. Too hot, some say. Just right, say others. Tolerable, says I. Since my days are spent in an air conditioned office, a little heat is a-ok with me. I can go sleeveless at work, but always bring an extra layer - like this pashmina scarf. I like to think of it as my office binky.

It's finally Friday. Holla! (FYI - Urban Dictionary words and phrases are slowly taking over my vocabulary. It's about to get real classy up in here.)

Copycat: Straps & Boots

I gave up on spaghetti straps a long time ago. They gave me too much grief. Several have stayed in my closet - the ones that can be easily layered with a tee or tank under, a cardigan over, or both. But I'm not buying any new strappy dresses. Ever. I swear.

Well, I take back the swearing. There may be an exception some day.

Now thanks to this look from Fossil, I'm scouring the thrift stores for real cowgirl boots. Mine are McFakes and not as sturdy or comfortable as I would expect real cowboy boots would be. I would wear them with everything - dresses, skinnies, shorts...in a house, with a mouse, here and there, I would wear them anywhere. I would. I swear. And I really mean it this time.

Yesterday was my first official day at Hot Mama. I read how the concept for the company was born, learned several different shirt and pant folds, and got to try on a bunch of different jeans to find out what makes them unique and expensive.

Honest to goodness, I tried on a pair of jeans that were softer than the softest pjs, and uber flattering. Pretty sure they're worn in heaven. No doubt worth the $100+ price tag. I haven't memorized all of the brands and styles yet, but when I do, this blog will likely be the dumping ground for my new found information. Prepare to know more than you ever cared to about denim. You've been warned.

Oh my gosh, you guys. I'm so excited. I got a job. Another one. As if full-time employee, blogger, wife, pug-mama, friend, choir member, etc. wasn't enough. This one is part-time and fashion-related! Starting Tuesday, I will be a stylist at Hot Mama! Eeeeeeek!

I got my work schedule today. Mapped out public transportation routes. Studying up on product lines via the website. Can't wait to share my favorite Hot Mama styles with you!

Many people associate Hot Mama with maternity clothes, but in fact most stores have discontinued maternity lines altogether. That doesn't mean it isn't the perfect place to shop with a bun in the oven! There are TONS of styles that will accommodate a growing belly and still be super flattering after baby is born.

Stormy Style Salon

Did you know that the stylists at John Frieda have taken their show on the road? It's true. John Frieda DESTINATION: STYLE SALON TOUR 2011 hit Minneapolis over the weekend. I was invited (and excited!) to take part. Style me up for FREE? - YIPPEE! Made an appointment for Friday noonish with plans to meet up with ever-fabulous Erin of Babes in Thriftland. I had to book it back to work by 3, so left in plenty of time get there and get styled. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans for my day.

I found myself caught in a torrential downpour on my way to the Mall of America where the salon was stationed. The 20 minute drive from St. Paul was stressful. I found the salon easily, but it seemed everyone and their mama was at the mall, making nearby parking tough to find. Was I smart enough to check the car for an umbrella? Of course not. Thankfully, Erin came prepared.

We stood out in the drizzle for several minutes before being informed that the stylists had been relocated to the mall for safety purposes. Apparently high-voltage equipment in a glass & metal box in the middle of a parking lot in a thunderstorm is NOT safe (good to know). So we waited. Took pictures. Waited. After a few minutes, the stylists filed back into the salon and we were told to wait for the all clear from their weather source. Thunder rolled again and once more, the stylists made their way back to the mall to wait out the weather.

I couldn't stay. I never got styled. Major bummer. Instead, Erin and I grabbed a bite to eat, talked blog, then sadly parted ways. Thankfully, she was able to get in for a cute style before the day was out. So needless to say, Erin's review of the style salon is much better than mine.

Woman-Repelling: A Rebuttal

Some of you Spoils-fans have hurt my fashion-feelings (butnot really), by telling me that I’m wrong in my opinion of Jill’s outfit choicein ‘Man-Repelling?’ Let me start by saying I love my wife dearly, and she hastremendous fashion sense. However, she’s been known to occasionally get focused on a single clothing item, and things occasionally get out of hand in theprocess of ‘making it work’.

In ‘Man-Repelling?’, Jill has posted an outfit that was cuteas heck, but didn’t fit. She tried to cover it up by adding items. In the onephoto it seemed to work, but there were several other problems you couldn’tsee. The underskirt was a good 4-inches smaller in diameter than the dress overit.

See, even Miles disapproves. The ‘between’ liningwas bunched in a very ‘A-symmetrical’ shape due to the added belt, which hidthe ‘preggers look’ that baby-doll dresses tend to pose.

I could go on…

Ok. Ok. I feel your stabbing glares on my neck. I know youare all fans of Jill and not me. Thisdude just hi-jacked her blog and started bashing her. How dare he? Well, Iam the dude that sees her hour-long process of trying on various outfits in themirror. I know what it’s like when everyone loves her outfit. I know what it’slike when she gets an ‘I’d never wearthat’ look from a co-worker who then says, “Cute outfit!” to her face. I’mhere to defend my position, and try to score some sensitivity points for all of“man”-kind. I AM MAN. Hear me… give a dress critique.

At personal risk of being labeled a sexist, I’ve decided tojourney into the female brain. Please don’t hold it against me. I’m not aNeanderthal. In fact, my Jill has claimed that I toe the ‘metro’-line onoccasion. Personally, I think I’m just an observant guy who knows my wife. AndI don’t think I’m that far off.

You gently work the front racks, flipping hangers like arolodex. But you’re a pro. Your eye is naturally and instinctively drawn to thebright turnstile signs in the back of the store. Clearance, you say? 50 percent off?

“Baby you’re a firework!”

You casually sift through the forgotten items ofseasons-past. Does it smell worse backhere? Oops, stray belt on the floor.Then, suddenly, it’s there. It barely clings for life to the hanger. One sleevehas already made its escape. In an instant you know. This is your outfit.

“Boom. Boom. Boom.” Socute!

“Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon” Probably my size!

“Boom. Boom. Boom.” Notsuper cheap, but cheap enough!

Dang I feel good. Thisone’s mine!

The dots! The colors! Ahh, all the little frills that makeit work.

It fits your style, your personality. It will fit your body, right?!

You don’t even want to try it on, for fear ofdisappointment. But at that price, you’d better do the right thing. So, off tothe dressing room with you.

Shoot. It doesn’t reallyfit… but you just… can’t… let… go.

Let me check the rackagain. Nope. It’s the only one left. Let’s see… I got a belt I can use to keepit from bunching in the middle. I got a tank-top I can wear under it so theback isn’t so low. I’ll MAKE it work! Ring me up, cashier!

Granted I probably didn’t get in your brain, but I’m prettysure I made my wife smile.

Listen, I get that there’s an art to shopping. I’ve watchedStacy and Clinton. I know a size 8 can be anything from 6 to 12 depending onbrand. But what I’d like to do is simply take a moment to pose a fewsuggestions that will put you (not Katy Perry) in the driver seat.

1) Err on thebigger side. Of course you want to be a size smaller. I’m a guy, and so doI (that rhymed). But the simple fact is that when you find your “must have”outfit, it also “must have” to fit. Once purchased, it will mysteriously shrink. Your boyfriend will wash it in hot water.You’ll need to wear something under it one day. You won’t be able to stretchit. The hemline will recede like… well, my hairline. But if you didn’t startwith a skin-tight garment, it’s ok. If it’s truly meant to be, and it’sslightly larger, you can always alter the garment later (or at least alter thetag so it doesn’t scream “LARGE”).

2) Shop with atrue friend. Bring someone along who knows you, likes you, and has no personal feelings for the garment itself. Donot bring your husband. He’d rather be playing Halo, and you won’t listen tohim anyway. It doesn’t matter ifhe’s right, cuz he’s a man in your world and he’s wrong.

3) Baby, you’reNOT a firework! Under no circumstances should you get caught up in themoment. Stores are experts atselling. Their staff, their signage, their music is all designed to lull youinto a euphoric spending spree. Stay away from the salesperson. Trust nostranger! Know what styles work for your physique (or see #2). Get an app on your phone where you can comparesimilar styles with what’s right in front of you. It may be cheaper across thefood-court. This is war, baby. Boom. Boom. Boom.

Hopefully, though, this will help youunderstand that we men do take notice and interest in what you wear. Even if wecan’t put it succinctly, please know that we try.

Let me say one more thing before I un-hi-jack this blog. Asmen, we do want you to have funshopping. Buy clothes that matter. Don’t compromise on your fit (waistline),morals (hemline), or funds (pocket-line). Cosmo isn’t always right about us.Sorry, that was like six things.

Pretend it's soft cotton or breezy linen and it smells like sunshine and beach. Pretend also that I am wearing a straw hat and balancing fruit on my head. Chiquita Banana much?

Now let's imagine that this skirt possesses special powers and will magically transport me to a tropical location of my choice. First stop: Disney's private island in the Bahamas. Boy-oh-boy am I itchin' for a cruise. A Disney Cruise. Grab hold of the skirt and maybe you can join me on my delusional vacation!

My husband really hated this outfit. Like, we went for a walk over lunch-hour and I'm pretty sure he was embarrassed to be seen with me. Grechen talks about man-repelling outfits. Apparently, this falls into that category. I would never intentionally repel my man, but I think it's ok in small doses. Can't please everybody all the time, right?

I felt rather brilliant putting this ensemble together. The dress is too short to wear belted and bare-legged, so the polka dot skirt was introduced. The two seemed to get along quite well. My only regret was not wearing heels.

Sometimes he's right. Sometimes he's dead-wrong. (Sorry, babe. Love you.)

Glancing in my closet, you wouldn't think that I love yellow as much as I do. Makes me feel like hypocrite. It's not the first time, I assure you. Say one thing, buy another. It's one of my many character flaws that I have no intention of overcoming. Brutally honest, baby.

How do you like my makeshift necklace? The single-strand wasn't doin' it for me, so I pulled out my faux-pearls (not to be confused with my real pearls - ahem), and started looping and folding. This is the end result. Grande improvement.

Don't you just love my Spanish-speaking skills? 2 years in high school and I actually had to google 'spanish word for yellow'. Studious? No. Witty and sarcastic? On a good day.

Oh boy! Lots of great shopping over the weekend! Ladies night out on Friday led a friend and me across the state line to Hudson, WI. I forgot how adorable the downtown area is. We stopped at the sweet La Rue Marche boutique where I purchased a Pug luggage tag. Had dinner on the patio at San Pedro Cafe' and then dessert and live music by Anne Deming at Urban Olive and Vine.

Saturday morning, I joined the staff at Hot Mama in St. Paul for an unofficial work hour. I haven't worked retail in years and never at a place of such high-quality - referring to both merchandise and customer service. It was SO much fun - like hanging out in a massive closet with a bunch of girlfriends! I couldn't pass up a blazer with elbow patches (*wink).

After a much-needed nap, the BFF and I checked out the new Gordman's in Woodbury. It's a really nice, well-kept store with discount prices similar to Burlington Coat Factory, TJMaxx, or Marshall's. We weren't big fans of the women's clothing selection, but the intimates and accessories were worth the trip. What I saw of the men's and housewares departments was decent too.

I've been trying to hunt down white skinny jeans and got really lucky at Target. I never pay full price for anything there, but with such a great fit and the only pair in my size, I couldn't help myself.

So you like my red, polka dot dress, huh? No wonder that it's one of ModCloth's top rated items! Of course, I'd rather Shop Local, but if that isn't an option for you, Shop ModCloth instead. I shopped around a long time to find the perfect Minnie-inspired dress. This little number fits me SO well and has 'remixing' written all over it - excited to wear it with tights and belted cardigans in colder months! Just beware of the shoulder pads. I like 'em, but they're not for everyone.

Copycat: Bad Excuses

Ok, so this copycat is a bit of a stretch. I'm crazy about the shorts+blazer trend, but am having difficulty finding a time and place to implement it. Ok, so maybe that's a bad excuse. Truth is, I've been severely lacking in the style department lately. Not that I've succumbed to the midwestern corporate casual uniform by any means, I just haven't been making the usual effort.

For work, I throw on whatever is clean and doesn't require ironing. Then when I get home, it's straight for my super-distressed jeans and a t-shirt. I'd say that I'm tired, but that is also a bad excuse. Seriously, who isn't tired?

If I were to be completely honest, I'd say that my proverbial wheels have been spinning in several areas of my life. Effort without progress is tiresome. It's time to either get out and walk or call a tow truck. Not sure what action either of those things represent, but maybe you know what I mean...

All that to say, what I wear often reflects other areas of my life. It's not particularly bad. On the contrary, I'm quite optimistic. I'm just not the type to stand still or wait. The choices are forward motion or complete melt-down. Or a road trip. Road trips can cure me of anything temporarily.

Thankfully, I know from past experience that just before the melt-down, the mud will dry, the wheels with kick into gear and I'll jolt forward. There will be whiplash.

I've been clickin' around for a good online printing company. Steve had this great idea for Christmas cards. Since when do we send Christmas cards? Since we adopted this ridiculous pet alien, dressed him up like a gentleman, and had his picture taken. Since then. Why am I thinking about Christmas cards in July? Because I'm sick like that.

I've also been thinking about hosting another clothes swap. It's about that time, isn't it? Maybe sometime in August or September? Back-to-School shopping will forever taunt me. Must. Refresh. Wardrobe. What better way to refresh than swap? But maybe I'll fancy things up this year...starting with postcard invitations, perhaps?

The Vintage One

Looks can be deceiving. What your eyes behold is not a dress, but a romper! Finally, FINALLY a romper that does not ride up my you-know-what or expose my ghostly white, un-toned thighs. This makes successful romper acquisition #2. Since my other romper is denim (seen in this post), I call it the casual one. This is the vintage one. My bathroom excursions may be somewhat complicated, but it's totally worth it.

My 4-day weekend went by way too fast. The weather continues to be gorgeous and all I want to do is laze around in the sunshine, eat popsicles, read, nap, and repeat.

Favorite Holiday

Gosh, I love Independence Day. It might be my favorite holiday. Thanksgiving is pretty great too. Let's call it a tie. Christmas is definitely not my favorite...too much stress, never enough time or money.

I spent the day on my in-laws boat on the St. Croix river. The weather was perfect. This is not what I wore. I wore a bathing suit, cut-off jean shorts, a Minnie Mouse tank top, and NO makeup...in true American form.

It was discovered that Miles can swim/float.

It was determined that I am terrible at applying sunscreen...to myself and others.

Captain Pug

As you can imagine, I kinda freaked out over this nautical pug tee when I spotted it on Etsy. Miles approves and imagines a sweet smelling narcotic in that pipe. When disc-golfing, he always sniffs out the weed-smokers. Tries to be their best friend. Oh, and you better watch your beer...he likes that too. Cigarette butts? Eats 'em like candy. But he'll pass up cigarettes for ABC (Already Been Chewed) gum. He has his preferences.

I am so glad it's Friday! A long weekend of fun (and maybe a little rest?) awaits. See ya later, alligators.

Winning Wraps

Funny thing about this dress...I purchased it several years ago at Old Navy. It was on clearance for $10. I had to really think about it, even at that super low price. I just wasn't sure if I liked the print or color scheme. Considering the style (easy one-piece) and fabric (wrinkle-free), I bought it thinking it would be a good grab-and-go dress for those mornings when I'm...

a) in a hurry

b) don't feel like ironing

c) staring blankly into my closet abyss internally complaining that I have nothing to wear!

d) all of the above.

Those mornings are somewhat frequent, so the dress came home with me.

It has served it's purpose and then some. This particular day, I...

1) went to work

2) attended a class

3) went to an interview-thingy

4) took the dog to the vet

5) had dinner/music date with the hubby.

This easy little $10 dress from Old Navy was appropriate and comfortable from 6am-11pm, and I got about a bazillion compliments on it. THAT is one winning garment if I do say so...(I do).

The most versatile and flattering wrap dresses will have particular design elements:

1) sleeves (3/4 is my preference)

2) slip or cami option (not necessarily the built-in kind)
3) knee-length or slightly above
4) wrinkle-free (poly-blends are the best!).

As a girl with an hourglass figure who wears many hats (figuratively and literally) in life, I find that wrap dresses play a vital role in my wardrobe. Ms. DvF gets two thumbs up and a curtsy from me for this brilliant design. What do you think of the infamous wrap dress?

Copycat: Stay or Go

I have decided that it's time for an upgrade on this blazer. I like it, it's very versatile, but the cut is just too boxy and unflattering. Even buttoned, it looks and feels bulky.

Being that this perfect gingham blazer is a whopping 70% off at Esprit Outlet online, you'd think I'd be all over that. But blazers are one thing that I'm very wary about buying without trying on first. I hate returns, even when they're free.

This skirt, also tempting, also 70% off, is being strongly considered because the pleated one I'm wearing is a tad too big. I seem to fluctuate in size a lot and never know what to do with items that are a little too big or small. Do I store them away figuring that they will probably fit again in a month...maybe a year? Or do I consign or donate and eventually replace those items? Steve and I use every last inch of storage space we have and I've been more inclined to simply get rid of stuff though constantly fighting the urge to hoard. But then I think...it's just stuff, I should get rid of it. I'm looking forward to reading Indiana's thoughts on this similar topic.

I'm finding lots of great buys at ESPRIT - Outlet store!! If you ever consider buying something at the regular Esprit store (online), maybe just wait a month or two and you could find it for much less at the Outlet. I love that most of their items are displayed in full outfits - lots of copycatting to be had (if you haven't noticed).

Dapper Fam (Take 2)

Well, the fam isn't feeling so dapper today. We're now dealing with a serious issue in Miles' eye. It's one thing after another for my sweet alien. Steve is very sore and achy from our riotous weekend. I'm stuck at work, worrying about my boys. Trying to turn exhausted and frustrated into prayerful and optimistic. It's a battle, but these pictures help...

Classic Pump

Ah, yes. The classic pump. This is my favorite type of shoe. It's just so....classy (duh). A no-brainer, looks-great-with-everything, never-out-of-style style. They make my short legs look long and my ankles appear extra skinny - win!

Jessica Simpson Collection is one of my favorite brands for pretty footwear. I think the quality and comfort level is very good for the price...especially if you're watching for sales like moi. These beauts are on sale for $50-$60 depending on color. I have my eye on the taupe and navy. Modern, navy pumps aren't easy to find in my world. Of course, I'm likely to wait too long for the price to go down even further and miss my window of opportunity. I'm cheap and indecisive like that.
